Hero Mom of the Day: Mother of two Stephanie Decker is being hailed as a hero after she managed to shield her children from harm during last week’s record-setting tornado outbreak.

Sadly, Decker, a resident of the devastated town of Henryville, Indiana, did not escape injury: Both of her legs were badly damaged by falling debris and had to be amputated.

“I assumed I was safe and I heard the roar like a train, and I heard it behind me, and I knew it was coming,” she said, reliving her harrowing ordeal from a hospital bed in Louisville. “And it was so loud that I knew that I needed to do something different. I knew staying put wasn’t going to work.”

She scrambled to protect her son and daughter, 8-year-old Dominic and 5-year-old Reese, who were hunkered down in the basement. Decker covered them with a comforter and used her own body as a shield against the disintegrating house.

Just then, the ceiling caved in and her legs were crushed.

Dominic, who, like his sister, was unhurt thanks to his mom, ran for help. Decker was eventually removed from her flattened home and brought to the hospital, where she remains in critical but stable condition.

Kayak Fisherman Rescues Dog: Bizarre End To Grisly Tale

A fisherman kayaking on the Gulf of Mexico over the weekend made one catch he’ll never forget — a dog swimming for his life off the Siesta Key coast.

What initially seemed like a bizarre rescue actually took place following a horrific tragedy, when a drunk driver fatally struck the dog’s owner in a hit-and-run accident approximately one mile from the shore, according to ABC Action News.

Authorities told the local Patch that they found Donna Chen, 53, face down on the pavement that afternoon, while her dog, Barney, was nowhere to be seen.

Police said that the suspected driver, Blake Talman, was fleeing another crash scene when his Nissan Altima spun out of control, striking Chen and Barney, as well as some landscaping, a street sign, a telephone line, and several wooden poles lining the entrance to a church, according tot he Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

Talman and his passenger were both taken to a local hospital to be treated for serious injuries.

It wasn’t until after posting the rescue video to YouTube that the kayaker connected the accident to his timely rescue.

“Our guess is that [the dog] was so freaked out and traumatized that he just wanted to get as far away from there as possible,” he wrote in the video’s description. “And when he ran out of land, he took to the water.”

The kayaker pulled the visibly distraught and injured dog to safety. He is now with the family and is expected to make a full recovery.

Talman, 22, is charged with DUI manslaughter in addition to DUI property damage and personal injury.

Heartbreaking Tearjerker of the Day: After Lao Pan passed away this month at 68, his only Earthly companion, a light-haired dog, disappeared from his home in Panjiatun, a village near Qingdao, China.

Residents of the village later found the mutt sitting by his former owner’s grave site, where he remained for seven days, unmoved by the villagers efforts to coax him away with food.

When they forcibly removed him and gave him some sweet buns to eat, he merely took the buns and brought them back to the grave. They eventually relented and brought the food to him.

Sky News reports that there a plans to build a kennel for the dog inside the graveyard, so that he can always be near his best friend.

BAMFs of the Day: Rapid City police officers Kathleen Callery, Chris Hunt, Michael Frybarger, with the aid of nurse Laurie Mills, a good Samaritan who happened to be driving by, save the life of Jeff Seamans, who went into cardiac arrest while driving through town on his way to Montana.

The two other women in the video are Seamans’ wife and stepdaughter.

According to the video’s description, here’s what it doesn’t show:

EMS took over CPR, and within minutes, Seamans was breathing on his own. Seamans was transported to Rapid City Regional Hospital, where he recovered and was released several days later.

Officers Callery, Hunt, and Frybarger were awarded the Life Saving Medal. Mills received a Community Service Award for her assistance.

Miracle Dog: Daniel the Beagle Up for Adoption After Surviving Gas Chamber

By ARIELLE MILKMANOct. 29, 2011 It’s a happy ending that wasn’t supposed to happen for a big eared, doe-eyed beagle.

Now, the dog that was found as a stray in Alabama and defied death, is searching for a new home.

Three weeks ago, the beagle was euthanized along with 18 other dogs at an overcrowded animal shelter in Florence, Ala., on Oct. 3.

But to the shock of everyone he somehow survived.

When the animal control officer in charge of the operation returned to the locked chamber he found the dog waiting at the door, wagging its tail. The other dogs were dead.

His amazing survival has attracted several charitable groups to come to his aid to make sure he isn’t sent back into the gas chamber. He found a temporary home in Tennessee with Karen Rudolph, who runs Schnauzer Savers Rescue of West Tennessee with her husband Michael.

Rudolph dubbed him Daniel, inspired by the biblical story of Daniel, who walked out of a lion’s den unscathed. Eleventh Hour Rescue, which brought Daniel to New Jersey with the help of Pilots and Paws, gave the dog the last name Milagro, which means miracle in Spanish.

When Rudolph took Daniel Milagro to see her veterinarian, he received a clean bill of health.

Six F/A-18 Hornet fighters wait on the runway threshold. The blades of their turbines spin leisurely at idle. Buckled into the cockpits are the pilots of the Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron … the Blue Angels.

Sunlight beats down on the canopies. The pilots sweat, stuffed into tight-fitting g-suits. They listen for the signal from the control tower … from 8-year-old Make-A-Wish^® kid Ethan.

Ethan keys the mic, clears them for takeoff and adds “have a good one!” The whine of the engines amplifies to a ground-shaking roar. The Blue Angels make the magical transition from ground-bound to airborne.

There’s also a miraculous change in Ethan. When he was diagnosed with a brain tumor, his life revolved around hospital visits and medical treatments. His parents experienced endless worry and exhaustion. Every dream, every goal … they were all overshadowed by trying to heal. Today, that changes. Ethan dreams again.

Watching the Blue Angels in flight has Ethan spellbound. When they land, the squadron inducts him as an honorary member. The pilots present him with autographed photos.

Ethan’s experience is more than touring the Naval Aviation Museum tour, sitting in the planes, meeting the Blue Angels pilots and the support staff. The true gift is rediscovering a future of endless possibility.

Look At This Awesome Dog of the Day: Harper, an 11-week-old pit bull born with a debilitating disorder commonly known as “swimmer puppy disorder,” was found in a trash bag and brought to a shelter to be euthanized.

Dogs with pectus excavatum can’t walk and aren’t expected to survive, but Harper was lucky enough to find shelter regular Erica Daniel, who took the puppy home and, with a little TLC, slowly helped Harper learn to stand on her own four paws.

Daniel admits falling in love with Harper was not what she had in mind — “I’d planned on taking her home that night,” she told NBC’s Today, “letting her sleep in bed with us, and having her humanely euthanized in the morning” — but felt she couldn’t just give up, especially after seeing Harper’s determination to walk around on her own.

“The whole world was against her, but she’s such a fighter,” says Daniel. “She’s a blessing. She’s awesome.”
